England and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with Wales have been drawn in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

The Irish alongside Scotland also share a pool once again, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they claimed a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

If the pools conclude in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of England and Ireland until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
