The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
