Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and delight the passions of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
