This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple face the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
