Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
