Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to contest specific decisions from the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
